Exploring Spintronics – Eternal University’s Distinguished Lecture Series with Dr. Rohit Medwal from NTU Singapore

On September 18, 2021, the Department of Physics, Eternal University, Baru Sahib inaugurated its Distinguished Lecture Series in virtual mode. This initiative aims to encourage postgraduate students to explore advanced scientific research frontiers and engage with renowned global experts.

Guest Lecture on Spin-Based Logic and Memory Devices

The first lecture in the series featured Dr. Rohit Medwal, an esteemed physicist from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, who delivered an insightful talk on “Spin-Based Logic and Memory Devices.” The event witnessed active participation from faculty, students, and researchers across Eternal University and other institutions. Dignitaries like Dr. Sandipan Gupta (Dean, Akal College of Basic Sciences), Dr. Poonam Kumari, and Dr. Madan Lal graced the event.

Introduction to Spintronics – A New Era in Electronics

Dr. Medwal introduced the audience to the emerging and fascinating field of Spintronics – a blend of electronics and the intrinsic spin of electrons. He elaborated on how this technology can revolutionize data storage, logic circuits, and future electronics with greater efficiency and lower power consumption.

Integration of Spintronics with Solar Energy

An interesting highlight of the session was raised by Dr. Puneet Negi, who emphasized the potential integration of spintronics with solar energy harvesting. He noted that the Department of Physics at Eternal University is already working on enhancing solar device efficiency through innovative research approaches.

Dr. Medwal addressed this intersection by proposing possible solutions to electron-hole recombination in solar cells, thereby improving performance using spintronics-based methods.

A Successful Knowledge Exchange

The session concluded with Dr. Negi extending gratitude to the university’s leadership team — Vice-Chancellor Dr. Davender Singh, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. A.S. Ahluwalia, Dean PGS Dr. B.S. Sohal, and Registrar Dr. S.K. Chauhan,  for their continued encouragement and support in facilitating research-driven academic programs.
