In a world facing climate change, environmental degradation, and the rapid loss of biodiversity, the importance of protecting nature has never been greater. Alongside these challenges, there is also a growing global shift toward natural wellness and plant-based healing systems.
Recognizing the need to build awareness about nature’s invaluable resources, Eternal University Baru Sahib organized an engaging awareness programme on “Biodiversity Conservation through Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.” The initiative aimed to inspire students to understand the ecological, medicinal, and economic importance of plant biodiversity.
A Collaborative Initiative for Environmental Awareness
The programme was organized by the Green Innovation Club in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at Eternal University. The initiative brought together students, researchers, and faculty members to explore the critical role biodiversity plays in sustaining ecosystems and supporting human health.
The session began with a thoughtful welcome address by Dr. Amit Saurabh, Convener of the Green Innovation Club. In his remarks, he emphasized that conserving biodiversity today is essential for ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for the coming generations.
Understanding the Global Importance of Medicinal Plants
The highlight of the programme was an insightful lecture by Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, Akal College of Basic Sciences.
During his talk, he highlighted the growing global importance of medicinal and aromatic plants in healthcare systems, traditional medicine, and sustainable livelihoods. He also discussed practical methods for conserving biodiversity and explained how plant resources contribute to ecological balance and community well-being.
His lecture encouraged students to view biodiversity not only as an environmental asset but also as a foundation for future innovations in healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable development.
Learning from Nature – A Visit to the Herbal Garden
To make the experience more interactive and practical, participants visited the Herbal Garden at Eternal University, where students had the opportunity to explore a wide variety of medicinal plants.
During the visit, Mr. Rajender, Research Scholar from the Department of Biotechnology, introduced students to several important medicinal species and explained their therapeutic properties. He also highlighted how traditional knowledge and modern research can work together to promote sustainable use of plant resources.
The visit offered students a rare opportunity to observe nature’s pharmacy firsthand, strengthening their understanding of how biodiversity contributes to health and environmental sustainability.
Engaging Students in Environmental Responsibility
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from 95 students and faculty members, making it an impactful platform for environmental learning and awareness.
Such initiatives play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens who understand the importance of protecting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. By engaging students in discussions and experiential learning, the programme encouraged them to think about how their actions can contribute to a sustainable future.
Nurturing a Sustainable Future through Education
As the world increasingly embraces natural medicine, sustainability, and ecological conservation, educational institutions have a crucial role in nurturing environmentally conscious leaders.
Through initiatives like this awareness programme, Eternal University continues to promote environmental responsibility, scientific curiosity, and sustainable practices among students.
Here, education extends beyond classrooms and laboratories—it grows in gardens, ecosystems, and thoughtful minds that value and protect nature’s priceless gifts.
