From Waste to Renewable Energy – How Eternal University Is Creating a Living Lab for Sustainability

What if a university campus could generate energy from the very waste it produces?

At Eternal University, located at Baru Sahib, sustainability is not limited to textbooks or lectures. Instead, it is integrated into everyday campus life, allowing students to experience environmental responsibility in action.

In a powerful initiative to promote experiential learning, the Green Energy & Sustainability Club organized an immersive educational visit to the campus Akal Waste Management & Biogas Unit, turning theory into practical understanding.

A Hands-On Learning Experience for Future Innovators

The visit was organized in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC-SIT) and the Research and Development Cell (RDC) of Eternal University.

More than 100 students and faculty members participated in this learning experience, where they observed how organic waste is converted into renewable energy through biogas technology.

During the visit, participants explored

Waste collection and segregation processes
The functioning of the biogas generation system
Methods of converting organic waste into sustainable energy

By seeing the technology operate in real time, students gained a deeper understanding of how campus sustainability initiatives can reduce environmental impact and create renewable resources.

Learning Directly from Technical Experts

The experience went beyond observation. Students interacted with technical experts and sustainability practitioners, gaining insights into

  • Renewable energy technologies
  • Waste-to-energy innovations
  • Research opportunities in green energy

These discussions inspired many students to explore research and innovation possibilities in sustainable technologies, an area that is becoming increasingly critical for the future of the planet.

Building a Culture of Sustainability and Innovation

The initiative reflects the strong vision of Eternal University to develop an academic ecosystem that combines education, innovation, and environmental responsibility.

Such experiential learning programs strengthen the university’s commitment to

  • Sustainability-driven education
  • A strong innovation and research culture
  • Environmental awareness and responsibility
  • Holistic student development beyond traditional classrooms

By integrating sustainability practices within campus infrastructure, the university provides students with a living laboratory where real environmental solutions can be studied and improved.

Living the Values of Green Education

As the world moves toward sustainable development, universities play a crucial role in shaping environmentally responsible leaders.

At Eternal University, sustainability is not merely taught — it is practiced every day through initiatives that demonstrate how waste can become a valuable resource and learning opportunity.

By turning campus waste into renewable energy, the university continues to set an example of practical sustainability and innovation in higher education.
