Spreading Awareness on Kidney Health – Eternal University Marks World Kidney Day 2023

Akal College of Nursing, B.Sc.(N) & M.Sc.(N) run Awareness Campaign

As part of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing, the Akal College of Nursing, Eternal University organized an impactful event on World Kidney Day, 9th March 2023, across multiple locations in Himachal Pradesh, including Baru Sahib, Bonglikech, Rajgarh, Kheri, Nahan, and Shimla.

This global campaign focuses on raising awareness about the significance of kidney health, preventive measures, and supporting those vulnerable to kidney-related diseases.

Theme of World Kidney Day 2023

“Kidney Health for All – Preparing for the Unexpected, Supporting the Vulnerable”
The theme emphasizes the importance of kidney care, especially for individuals at higher risk due to health vulnerabilities.

Free Health Checkups and Screenings Across Himachal Pradesh

  • Health Screening Camps at Multiple Locations
  • Venues: Baru Sahib, Rajgarh, and Kheri
  • Blood Pressure (BP) Monitoring
  • Blood Glucose Level Testing

The local community showed enthusiastic participation in the health screening, with voluntary checkups for early detection of health issues like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney disease.

Health History Assessment

Focus on identifying risk factors such as:

  • Substance abuse
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Chronic kidney diseases
  • Diabetes

Awareness Activities to Educate the Public

Nukkad Natak (Street Plays) & Poster Exhibitions

  • Target audience: Adolescents, adults, elderly, medical and non-medical professionals, literate, illiterate, laborers, and farmers.
  • Objective: Spread awareness about kidney health, prevention strategies, and healthy lifestyle habits.

Special Programs at Hospitals

  • Dr. YSP Medical College & Hospital, Nahan
  • Organized by B.Sc. Nursing 4th-year students and faculty from Akal College of Nursing.
  • Official permissions were taken from the Medical Superintendent.
  • Activities focused on public awareness, risk prevention, and understanding kidney health.

Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla

  • Held at the Renal Ward of IGMC, with approval from the Nursing Superintendent Ms. Prem Negi.

Sessions included:

  • Introduction to kidney functions
  • Signs & symptoms of kidney failure
  • Diagnosis and types of dialysis
  • Treatment options and preventive care
  • Patients and attendants actively engaged, asking questions and appreciating the valuable information shared.

Recognition for Social Impact

The Department of Community Health Nursing from Akal College of Nursing was honored with an award from the Child Development Office, Rajgarh, recognizing their efforts in running impactful social awareness campaigns.

Making an Impact, One Step at a Time

The World Kidney Day 2023 celebration by Eternal University was a resounding success. It empowered the community with knowledge, encouraged preventive healthcare practices, and provided free health screenings.
